What is Hypnobirthing?

 

Well, firstly, don’t let the name put you off! Hypnobirthing is all about having a  positive birth experience, no matter how you birth your baby.

 

In a Hypnobirthing Australia™ class, you will learn some amazing self-hypnosis techniques to help achieve a state deep relaxation and calm. These techniques are what are sets us apart from other classes, and can be used and applied to every situation that may present itself during labour and birth (and even situations unrelated to birth).

 

We also teach women and partners practical strategies such as acupressure, and light touch which are not only deeply relaxing, but encourage all of the beautiful hormones of labour and birth (particularly oxytocin and endorphins) to flood the body and drive the labour and birth process. These practical techniques also deepen the connection between the mother, her baby, and her birthing partner, fostering a sense of safety, comfort and trust.

 

Birth partners are very much encouraged in a hypnobirthing class, as they have a very special role to play as your support person. These can range from your partner, sister, mother, friend, or anyone who will be your main support person on the big day. However, you can definitely attend class on your own, and still benefit from all of the techniques that we teach.

 

Hypnobirthing helps many mothers by releasing any fears she has around giving birth. Some women have been told negative stories from friends and family members, and this often has a significant impact, whether she is even aware of it or not! Women don’t often share their happy and empowering birth stories, sometimes out of fear of being judged, so women can sometimes believe that the negative stories must be the “norm”. This is where hypnobirthing can help to debunk the myths, release fears, and allow women to go into their labour and birth feeling confident, happy and strong.

 

You will have access to a beautiful range of birthing videos that are varied in their content and up-to-date. You will also have access to further evidence-based reading on topics related to birth, giving you all the information you need to make informed decisions for yourself and your baby. This is all provided via a unique online platform (Hypnobubs™) that allows you to download MP3’s, download information and access birth videos from the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits you. In addition, you will receive a beautiful resource booklet with all of the course information set out for you.

Ultimately, hypnobirthing is a complete childbirth education program that will equip you with many tools to help navigate the labour and birth process, and put you in control of your own birth experience. Even if the birth changes its course for whatever reason, you will be ready and prepared with a positive and flexible mindset.

Results from a randomised controlled trial published by Levett (et al., 2016) showed that there was a significant reduction in the use of epidurals and the occurrence of caesarean section when complementary therapies are implemented as as adjunct. The evidence is there! These techniques work.

When is the best time to attend a class?

Anytime prior to the birth of your baby! However, the most ideal time is between 20-33 weeks of pregnancy so that you have time to practice all of the beautiful techniques. If you are fast approaching your baby's birth, please contact me for guidance on the most appropriate class for you.

Is the course only for first time parents?

Definitely not. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether you are a first time parent, or having your 5th baby! The skills we share benefit all women, and there is so much to learn and discuss during the Positive Birth Program.
